Bugling Bull Elk at Rocky Mountain National Park

    By PK | September 30, 2008

Monday Dalton and I helped break down elk camp after a month of bow hunting. We traveled to Longmont to the eastern side of the Rockies, unloaded the gear, and planned to ride through the RMNP on our way back to Steamboat. On the east side of the Rockies, just outside of Estes Park, but inside the RMNP the elk were gathered. The elks have left the top of the Rockies to congregate the lower pastures.

Bulls seemed to be in full rut, running around protecting their herd from being stolen by other bulls. I zoomed in on this 6×6 bull and I couldn’t help but laugh as he posed. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bull disregard me in such a way by ’showing his rear’ and ’sticking out his tongue’. Quite humorous!

The cows seemed uninterested in his attentions as they laid sunning or grazing.

There was a skirmish between two bulls resulting in false charging, but no clashing of horns, as the bulls competed at increasing their herds.

The two bulls are between the two herds of cows. Click on the photo to enlarge.

Another monster bull is watching from the edge of the woods. Perhaps it’s his intention to take all the cows once the other bulls have wore themselves out trying to protect their herds. It would have been interesting to watch, but we wanted to cross the Rockies before nightfall.

The following video is of the 6×6 as he advances his attentions on the uninterested cows. He bugles his desires, and chases one cow after another without success. Hey, remember this is a family resource website! Got to keep it clean!

More elks with their herd of cows were on the western side of RMNP as well. So, if you’re in that area of Colorado, join the audience for continued viewing of these magnificent animals.

Are you wondering what’s left on top the Rockies in the elk grazing areas? Join Blogging Us tomorrow to find out the answer.
