Colorado Elk Starting to Bugle
By PK | September 9, 2008
With the weather cooling off, the elk in Routt National Forest are once again starting to visit the lower regions coming down from the upper areas of the mountains to herd up for rut season.
Dalton and I went for a drive Sunday evening, not quite sure as to what wildlife we’d see and were very surprised to see a multitude of antelope, deer and even some elk. Now that really surprised me! Not only did we see elk, but we seen elk beginning to herd up for the winter. We seen one 4×4 with two cows, a sure sign that rut season is beginning.
All summer I saw very few elk in Routt National Forest. We went up over Trail Ridge several times, and up on top were herds of them, especially since the day we went was rainy and cool. But the herds were in groups, all the bucks together, and the cows, calves and young bucks in another group. Now seeing them both together tells me its rutting time. Several hunters have mentioned that they heard bugling. That’s one sound I’m hoping to hear tomorrow as Dalton and I once again head out for ‘my’ second experience in elk hunting. This time I hopefully won’t freeze up and forget to take pictures as I’m calling. I even camoflauged my camera for the event. So, bookmark me and remember to visit once again to read about my latest adventure in the wilds of Colorado. Until then, good luck to all the hunters!
