Four-Wheelin’ Rabbit Ear’s Mountain, Colorado
By PK | November 2, 2008
What better way to have fun on a weekend than to load up your four-wheeler and head up to Rabbit Ear’s Pass. It’s a great recreational area filled with snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and lots of forestry trails for hiking, snowshoeing, or four-wheeling.
This is one of the first mountain passes I was truly impressed with when Dalton and I first arrived in Steamboat last June. The first picture I ever took of Rabbit Ear’s is my header on this website. The second time we visited Rabbit Ear’s is when we hiked to the top in July of this year. I had only had a month to acclimate to the altitude here and Dalton still teases me about my huffing and puffing as I headed up the mountain.
Rabbit Ear’s Pass is located on Hwy 40 about 25 miles east of Steamboat Springs, Colorado. After reaching the top, either by vehicle along the highway, or climbing to the top as we did, it affords awesome views of the Yampa Valley.
The temperature when we began our journey was in the upper 40s, but when we reached the top, it was in the upper 20s, with the top of Rabbit Ear’s Mountain partially covered in snow.
There are two rock pinnacles at the top that always seem to be our destination and will draw hikers and four-wheelers alike to reach it’s top. In this picture, Dalton stands in front of one of the rock pinnacles.
Sitting on the back side is one of my favorite spots. Behind me is a huge drop off that will create dizzying effects. The altitude here is 10,400 feet and will contribute to that dizzying effect, especially to a girl who has lived most of her entire life at 600 feet elevation.
So, get outdoors and explore. Have fun, be safe, and follow all safety and forestry rules.

I had the privilege of living in Colorado for a few years. I was stationed at FT Carson there on the front range. It was a great place to live and explore. I got to hike up Pikes Peak a few times and sleep above 10000 ft. It is nice to wakeup in the morning with the clouds below you with the sun peaking over them.

No place for a ’stay at home and watch TV’ person that’s for sure.
