Lynx Pass, Routt County, Colorado
By PK | November 15, 2008
Lynx Pass was named for the numerous bobcats in this area and has excellent grazing pastures for cattle. Leaving Steamboat on Hwy 40 East, we took CR 131. Just past Toponas, turn left onto CR 134 and go about 7 or 8 miles til you reach Forestry Road #270 on the left. Just look for the sign, Lynx Pass.
Past timbering activities has left a network of roads for mountain bikers to enjoy. Since we weren’t biking it, but four-wheeling it (truck), we stayed on Forestry Road #270, then onto CR 16. There had been recent snow in the area, so we locked in the four-wheel drive.
We seen very few other vehicles on our excursion, even for hunting season. The snow would have been perfect for hunting and tracking area elk, as in this picture of elk tracks. Looks like quite a few of them crossed the road as they are herded for the winter.
Dalton always looks for elk and I always check out the scenery. If I’ve photographed in the area before, then I look for wildlife.
“Oh, back up!” I cried. He thinking I seen elk, me seeing a ‘picture perfect photograph’. Try saying that three times in a row.
The Laguanita Lake is located near the Tepee Creek Trail and Lynx Pass Campground. The Tepee Creek Trail is about two miles from Hwy 134, and the Lynx Pass Campground is just past this lake. Here’s a map of the area.
Lynx Pass Campground is open from Memorial Day and closes around September 30th. It has 11 campsites set among Lodgepole Pine trees. Facilities include drinking water and vault toilets, with fire grates and picnic tables in each campsite. Overnight camping fee is currently $10.00 per site and is on a first come, first serve basis.
The Tepee Creek Trail is on the right of this map and connects with the Tie Creek Trail at 2 miles. The other trailhead visible on the left of this map is the Morrison Divide Trail #1174. Morrison Divide Trail is 17.5 miles and offers views of Muddy Slide, Rabbit Ears Pass, and Steamboat Ski Resort.
We continued along CR 16 enjoying the winter scenery along the way.
At one ranch, I thought I saw a moose, but it turned out to be a cut-out. Okay, so I’m hanging my head in shame and embarrassment. It had me! Even in this photo it looks like a live moose, but if you look closely, you’ll see the post between the legs holding up the cut-out.
Old farm equipment make great landscape decor.
And clearly this neighborhood has quite a few pranksters…
County Road 16 continues through the Stagecoach area that is southeast of Steamboat before coming out onto Hwy 131, ending our loop through Routt County.
As we neared Steamboat, looking north, we had some awesome views of Mt. Werner and the Ski Resort.
Looking east, we captured views of Rabbit Ears Pass.
Looking southeast, we captured the Stagecoach area we just left.
It doesn’t matter in which direction you turn here in Colorado or whether you just want to turn in circles, the views are always spectacular.
The road seen along the upper edge of this mountain is the road to Rabbit Ears Pass. Why not go for a country drive in your area? Just pick a road and go! Enjoy the scenery, the wildlife, and lasting memories!

Hi. Lovely countryside views! The last pic was my favorite.
Here in south Portugal we don´t have snow (only in North), I can imagine how much fun it is.
A good Starting week. Cheers!
