Can I hear an Elk bugle, please?

    By PK | August 29, 2008

Tomorrow morning starts one of the Colorado’s big game hunts, archery for elk hunting, and I will be amongst many who participate calling the big bulls. Dalton bought me a ‘Hoochie Momma’, a cow elk caller for those who aren’t familiar with this device.

According to him, it’s practically faultless, but none the less, I must practice today. Now I ask you, can you imagine my poor neighbors? This caller is loud and is definitely designed to make every dog within a two block radius to commence barking and make the immediate people next door wonder if they’ve been invaded by elk cows in rut.

I had to give it a test run in the Walmart parking lot last evening creating a stir with a herd dog as he patiently waited for his owner in the back of a pickup truck.

But that didn’t stop there, no sirreee.

I continued to blast the sounds of a cow in heat all across Steamboat, the sounds echoing throughout the confines of the cab of our truck. It’s a miracle I can even hear this morning and I’m wondering after today’s usage, if I’ll even be able to actually hear a real one bellow her misery tomorrow, not to mention Dalton’s regret he even bought me this new hunting toy.

But hearing a live elk bugle in person, upfront and personal (just not too upfront and personal. I should be able to hear them from a mile away if they’re as loud as this bugler), is my goal. So, if I have to, I’ll stuff cotton in my ears to muffle the sound and will squeeze away.

There’s just one thing I’m worried about, and no, that’s not being arrested for disturbing the peace. Tomorrow morning will find me in elk territory, wearing camo, my backpack in tow, and actually smelling of an elk in heat. WHAT? Yep, Dalton wants me to wear cow elk essence to attract big bulls. WHAT? That was me saying it this time. If a big bull, smelling this cow elk essence (and I think you know what I’m talking about here) gets within 10, 20, 30 feet of me, that big bull will be smelling more than just the cow elk essence!

Stay tuned for further developing details of this next adventure in the wilds of Colorado. I’m sure as the season continues, things will be ‘heating’ up!

LOL! So glad that big Bull didn’t get a whiff of you! Could have been a tad scarry having one charging after to you!
