Cattle Drive in Steamboat Springs, Colorado

    By PK | July 6, 2008

The lowing of the cattle could be heard long before the pounding of the hooves on the pavement as the Cattle Drive through downtown Steamboat began. One hundred and ten pairs of long-horned cattle were herded down the street as onlookers waited in anticipation. Dressed in our slickers and cowboy hats, Dalton and I stood among the city folks in the drizzling rain. Though once a western town, with western roots, we felt out of place as the yuppies surrounded us in their shorts, flip-flops, sunglasses and occasional cowboy hat.

Before the cattle drive could even begin, police officers had to clear the streets, as the residents clearly ignored the posted signs, “Do not park after 2am on July 6th due to the Cattle Drive”. Angry, discontented customers eating breakfast were interrupted from their meal to move their vehicles. Some vehicles were still parked along Lincoln Avenue as the cattle drive started. I can’t help but wonder if these people are unaware of what a cow can do to a vehicle! Hello????

Yippee Yi Ya….move along little doggies!

These cattle look like they came straight from Texas.

This one with the longest horns was clearly a leader.

Cattle drive coming down Lincoln Avenue. Dalton and I only needed a couple of horses to help out!

I don’t think I’d want to be standing in front of this one!

The cows were well behaved as the continued on…

One wrangler keeping the cattle moving…

More wranglers trailing the herd. Wouldn’t want any to head down any side streets.

The doggies headed toward Romick Arena for their final leg of their journey.

How do they teach the cattle not to use the street as a toilet?

    3. PK Says:

That would be a trick indeed… Look at all the pretty pastures we’d have if we could. Maybe I should have taken an ‘after-effect’ picture of the street!!!

I always have enjoyed cattle drives! I’m surprised it is still allowed there! Even in some of these remote small towns in Washington…they don’t allow it! Thx for sharing!

    6. PK Says:

It was the first time I’d seen a cattle drive and was excited to see this one. What I’d like is to see a real cattle roundup, or better yet, participate in it. *smiles
