Craig, Colorado
By PK | July 14, 2008
This weekend we traveled to places in Colorado that I’ve never been to before. We started our trip from Steamboat and headed to Craig, Colorado on Hwy 40. Our destination is Durango, Colorado, and through our travels you’ll see Meeker, Ouray, the Grand Mesa, Silverton and Durango. On our way back I photographed Wolf Creek Pass, the Continental Divide, buffalo in the plains east of the Rio Grande National Forest, and Mt. Elbert, the tallest mountain in Colorado. You’ll also see the Collegiate Mountains, Mt. Harvard, Mt. Princeton, and Mt. Yale, all over 14, 000 feet. You’ll see abandoned mining camps, the Red Mountain Pass where the mountains are red, rich with iron and minerals. We traveled through the Uncompahgre National Forest, San Juan National Forest and San Juan Mountains.
So, sit back, relax, and enjoy the scenery…
Craig, Colorado is celebrating it’s 100th year and is located 45 miles west of Steamboat along Hwy 40 and is located in northwestern Colorado in Moffat County.
Craig is home to Grande Old West Days that take place during Memorial Day Weekend. You can read more about the Grande Old West Days here.
As in most western towns, the buildings take on a western feel, some with a little flair such as these ones.
Wildlife are also abundant in Craig and along Hwy 40. I took these pictures in Craig on one of the back streets.
Craig isn’t as expensive as Steamboat to live, or stay if you’re visiting and is well worth the drive to stay in Craig and visit the surrounding area.
Next stop…Meeker, Colorado.
