Hiking Bear Lake, Yampa
By PK | June 7, 2008
We went hiking last evening at the Bear Lake Area outside of Yampa. We scouted for wildlife while there, and sadly, only seen two deer as we entered the Routt National Forest and one red fox as we were leaving. No signs of Elk, Moose, or Bear which I would have liked to have seen.
The elevation was 9, 700 feet. For once, I didn’t get as winded and was able to hike comfortably. We didn’t stay on the trails, but hiked over rougher terrain. Dalton said I had to get prepared so I can carry my own backpack with supplies I’ll need for a ‘big’ hike. Okay….maybe.
I wasn’t prepared for the colder weather at the higher altitudes. When we left Steamboat Springs, it was 71. Steamboat is about 6900 feet, just the little difference between Bear Lake and Steamboat was quite a change. The temp was in the lower 50s. The wind was also blowing down from the Flattop Wilderness Area because of all the snow up there yet, making it seem even colder. But I survived!! (Smile)
This summer we plan to hike the Flattop Wilderness Area…one of last wilderness areas. All my ‘little’ hikes will prepare me for this ‘big’ hike.
There is still some snow up at Bear Lake. Some of it quite deep. And for those who know me, I don’t ‘DO SNOW’! Dalton took those pics of me trying to keep up with him crossing it. I guess it could have been rougher terrain, but for me…that is ‘rough terrain’!
I also have a fear of bridges…especially with rough, fast moving water under them. I could not cross the little foot bridge. I tried….but didn’t succeed. That makes me want to go back at a later time and actually cross it. Any bets I’ll succeed???
Here’s the pics I took at Bear Lake, Yampa, Colorado.
