Hiking Rabbit Ear’s Pass
By PK | July 19, 2008
You often hear the phrase, ‘A picture is worth a thousand words,’ and also the phrase, ‘The picture does not do it justice.’ Both those phrases comply with hiking Rabbit Ear’s. I could never in a million years express the view from the top of Rabbit Ear’s, nor do any of the pictures I had taken do it justice. It is one of those times, ‘you just had to be there.’
If this is your first visit, you may want to read the previous article I wrote on Rabbit Ear’s Mountain Range. Click the link here.
I think the one thing people who hike want to see more than the scenery is wildlife and on this trip we got the opportunity to see quite a bit. As we were headed up Rabbit Ear’s Pass on Hwy 40 south of Steamboat, we saw these moose, a cow moose with a yearling.
Our destination…still pretty far off. Without a map in hand, we take several four-wheel drive roads back towards these ominous pinnacles to get as close on wheels as we can.
The wildflowers are just now blooming at the elevation we are at. I haven’t seen any of these down lower. Beautiful, aren’t they?
I was totally amazed at these. Who would think that wildflowers could be this awesome?
This handsome mule deer buck stopped to check us out before bouncing away into the woods.
Obstacle number one… But we got by it.
Obstacle number two… This one we couldn’t get around or budge.
We turned around and parked near a trail…this is where the actual journey begins.
Obstacle number three…luckily there were stepping stones in place. The path here isn’t much, but with a little grit manageable.
I am a true sucker for wildflowers! Who could resist a high mountain pasture filled with such beauty.
Yeah…he couldn’t keep to the path, what there was of it. I’ll just grit my teeth and smile! LOL
I turned around…just once…and caught my breath!
Dalton checking for fresh tracks made by wildlife.
I couldn’t believe how out of breath I was…this just doesn’t look as steep as it actually was.
The first pinnacle of Rabbit Ear’s. See that little path on the right going up in front of it. That’s where I was standing shooting the video, with my knees shaking. Keep that in mind when you view it!
The second and tallest pinnacle. I was NOT going any closer. Did I mention I was afraid of heights?
And it’s a very, very long way down. Looking down from in front of the second pinnacle.
A shot of the sky and mountains from the back side of the first pinnacle. Looks like Heaven!
You could hear my knees knocking across the valley here…
Dalton checking the GPS tracking device, a must have for hiking in the Rockies.
Back to the front of the first pinnacle, the views are awesome. Don’t forget to watch the video. It’s on the left column. This is serenity…
Dalton’s favorite picture, as the sun was setting throwing it’s golden rays across the valley below.
I had to sit down..the heights were dizzying and had nothing to do with me being blonde. The cliff edge is right beside me.
On the way back, we decided to have a little fun. Anyone for a snowball fight?
Ahhhh, any excuse to get off my feet!
This deer is far away so it’s a little blurred.
Halfway down…a beautiful sunset!
Last shot of the day…
I hope you enjoyed our adventure in hiking Rabbit Ear’s Pass. I know we did!! But do not be mistaken. This hike was gruelling, the climb steep, but the rewards great!

What a journey you have blogged here the scenery is stunning and the widlife, well say no more. I lovely record to keep and share.
Tomatoes in the US I presume are the same as in the UK. I hated them when I lived there, they were bitter and just spoit salads, never use to eat them at all. Since in Bulgaria the ’sweet’ tomatoes, mostly home grown now are a staple diet and salads are eaten throughout the year. Never had it so good. You need to be here to try them to believe it!
I have also added you as a link. Best Regards and happy blogging.

To Martin…thanks for visiting and commenting. That hike was well worth the view at the top. I’m assuming you read the article about the tomatoes. We had some issues here with salmonella poisoning and tomatoes. I still haven’t eaten any tomatoes and I love them in salads.
To Blackhat…I checked out your blog, stuck my head in and dug around for awhile. I’ve got you bookmarked so I’ll be dropping by for visits.
