Rocky Mountain National Park in the Summer
By PK | August 4, 2008
A great way to cool off on a hot summer day with scorching temperatures high in the 90s or above is to take a drive through the Rocky Mountain National Park. Start your day early and bring a jacket and camera to see the elk grazing above the tree line on top of Trail Ridge Road.
It almost looks like fall with the damage the pine beetle is creating, killing a vast amount of Colorado’s pine trees. But the awesome, breathtaking views will compensate for the loss. This is a view of the Rockies as we approached from the west on Route 34 outside of Grand Lake, Colorado.
Two bull elks resting up top of Trail Ridge Road. To see more pictures of the elk, click here.
I almost missed this high mountain lake as we traveled up over the Rocky Mountains.
Can you find the lake in this picture? I zoomed in for the closeup in the above picture.
The edge of the road is close to this sudden drop off….kind of gives you the chills.
The tall poles serves the plows as guides when removing snow in the winter before Trail Ridge closes. If you’d like to see more pictures of the Rocky Mountain National Park in the early spring when it reopened just after plowing, click here.
That’s the road we were on to the right of the picture. The mountains are so tall and majestic, you have to zig-zag back and forth with hair-pin turns to climb their steep sides.
Our trip back through after going to Longmont. The weather changes quickly and rain clouds are approaching.
A beautiful high mountain pasture that the elks enjoy. They were right over the ridge out of view.
I hope you enjoyed our trip through the Rocky Mountain National Park. If you’ve never been here, it is one of the wonders of the world. Rugged, beautiful, and majestic.
