    Steamboat Springs 2008-2009 Ski Season

    By PK | September 23, 2008

    This is Ski Town USA!

    Steamboat Ski Resort

Colorado’s 3rd largest ski resort in Colorado resides here in Steamboat Springs. Steamboat Ski Resort consists of six peaks - Mount Werner, Sunshine Peak, Storm Peak, Thunderhead Peak, Pioneer Ridge, and Christie Peak. These ski slopes are filled with groomed cruisers, bumps, steeps, open meadows, legendary tree skiing and several terrain parks.

Opening day is November 27, 2008. Full season dates are November 27, 2008 to April 12, 2009. Scholarship Day is on Wednesday, November 26, 2008 and benefits Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club.

    Beautiful Snow Covered Landscape

Voted No. 1 Family Resort in the West four years in a row, Steamboat Ski Resort offers 3,000 acres, 165 trails and over 300 inches of Champagne annual snow for your skiing pleasure. Last year’s record Champagne snowfall was 474 inches. Of their 165 trails available to skiers, 14% are beginner, 42% intermediate and 44% advanced. The longest run is over 3 miles!!

Cardboard Classic -  Caterpillar made of cardboard

Steamboat Ski Resort earned this reputation of being voted number one because of its renowned Ski and Snowboard School, the Kids Ski Free program, Kids Fly Free program, Kids Rent Free program and now for the Steamboat Mountain/Watch, a unique GPS system which allows guests to better locate all members of their group on the Steamboat mountain.

    Champagne Snow

One of the largest new projects for this year is the snow making pipe replacement. It is said to last 50 years and runs along the Right-O-Way, See Ya, Bashor, Lower Vagabond and Lil Rodeo trails. These trails are primed key trails for early seasonal skiing in the lower mountain area.

Intrawest has spent 4 million dollars on improvements for this ski season. Besides the snow making, grooming equipment, an expansion of the Meadows Parking lot (200 extra spaces) and the opening of a new Steamboat Ski & Sport ticketing office in the downtown area of Steamboat Springs, which will open in November. The Steamboat Ski & Sport  will offer merchandise, lift tickets, and vacation planning services.

“The Boat”, another name for Steamboat

News on the Lifts - The Christie Peak Express six-pack will replace three lifts and cut the summit ride from 15 minutes to only five.

Steamboat Ski Resort has an uphill capacity of 32,158 per hour. That’s a lot of skiers!

The base elevation at Steamboat Ski Resort is 6,900′, midway is 9,080′, summit is 10,568′ and the vertical rise is 3,668′, the second highest in Colorado.

This will be my first winter here in Steamboat and my first attempt at skiing at the ripe young age of 50. This is bound to get interesting especially if Dalton yields the camera in my direction!

I used to ski…loved it! Too expensive these days, besides, I can’t trust Cowboy to NOT break a leg while doing it!
What PK, no elk yet?? Someone saw one in the apens HIGH up in Nevada this weekend…thought about you. The pix was awesome…kind of like that Bev Doolittle painting with the horses in the woods.

    4. PK Says:

And I’m seriously hoping “I” don’t break a leg. And no Elk yet!!! Seems last winter has taken it’s toll on the wildlife here, so they say. I believe it, hardly see any at all.
