Steamboat Springs Fourth of July Pro Rodeo
By PK | July 6, 2008
Romick Arena was packed and it was the largest turnout I’ve ever seen there. Half the people there weren’t from Steamboat. Dalton and I had ’standing room only’, and I guarded our spots faithfully. I had one run-in with some yuppies, I had been yuppied! Yes, yuppied!! You’d think that was some kind of disease! To me, it is! Everyone here in Steamboat calls the ones that weren’t raised with manners, think they own everything, and are better than you…yuppies! And I was yuppied!!! They tried to squeeze in on Dalton’s spot when he went to get some refreshments. They just didn’t know they were messing with a ‘red neck’ from Tennessee! Hell, the way red necks think is I paid $20.00 for that spot…it’s mine!!! I wasn’t about to let someone else stand there when I paid for it. Besides the yuppies’ kids kept ‘whining’, didn’t want to see the rodeo, and I wanted to hear the announcer! If anyone knows of any anti-yuppie hardware, please email me…. I desperately need some!!!
Steamboat’s Fourth of July Pro Rodeo began with a dedication to Our Great Country…a waving of the flags.
Enlarge this next picture and you’ll see the large sparkles as she ran with the American Flag…
A tribute to all the Veterans who had fallen in the name of FREEDOM…
And we’re off with the bareback broncs. Yoohoo…them there’s REAL cowboys! Not a yuppie wearing a cowboy hat who’s never mucked a stall!
Dalton and I had positioned ourselves across from the shoots where I could take pictures as soon as they were coming out…
This one came out kicking dust….one wild bronc!
Hang on….you can do it!!!
HeeeHawww…
“I don’t think I can hold on anymore”
This horse lost his footing and started to go down…Enlarge for full effect. The rider got another ride later.
This cowboy is laying flat out on the back of this bronc…can you imagine the jolt back up??
Lost a handle!
Next up….the Calf Scramble… A lot of children ready to run this little calf. Their goal…to get the ribbon off his tail.
I can’t help but feel sorry for the little calf…what must it be thinking seeing that many kids running after it?
They’re closing in…
The rodeo clown…
Some Saddle Broncs…
Only one of my pictures came out of the Women’s Barrel Racing…
After I got home and seen these next pictures, even though this is a new camera, I was ready to throw it in the garbage.
The Bull Riders…
After the finale of the bull riding, the lights in the arena went out for a sky display of fireworks. I was a little disappointed that they didn’t have a grand display at the end. We stood amongst horse trailers with a good view of Howselsen Hill. Horses were tethered nearby and weren’t too enthused with the booming of the fireworks. This was my first chance to photograph fireworks with a digital camera. I changed my ISO to 50, but didn’t have a tripod for my camera. Maybe next time…
Thanks for joining us as we celebrated this year’s Fourth of July. Today is the cattle run in downtown Steamboat, the Ranch Competition at Romick Arena, and another Rodeo later this evening. It’s raining here now, so I’m not sure which festivities we’ll attend. But I have a feeling…rain or shine…we’ll be there to see the cattle running down main street.
