The Longest Hike I’ve ever had…
By PK | June 8, 2008
I’m beginning to feel like my youngest son, who’s an MP in the Army. I keep telling myself this is not PT, as he calls ‘his long hikes’. On Saturday, Dalton and I decided to take another hike. We went to the Routt National Forest near Kremmling. For the most part, we were on a dirt road. We seen two mule deer. I captured one on film peeking out at us from around some aspens.
A little further down the dirt road in a partial clearing, we seen one cow elk. She didn’t hang around long enough for us to get her picture. Guess she was shy…
We continued hiking, another several miles. No deer, elk, or bear. I did see some more Colorado Wildflowers and stopped to take a pic of them. Also a pic of a green plant, unidentified as yet. I’ve been seeing alot of them up in the mountains and am waiting to see if they bloom.
Don’t go yet….cause you’ll get to see the most interesting thing on this hike. It actually happened after the hike…. Our GPS said we’d hiked 8.5 miles….my longest hike yet. I also carried the backpack for awhile. Well, okay, mostly downhill. But it’s a start.
Anyway, after we got back into the truck and started to head back to Steamboat, we got to see the most amazing sight. It was definitely a first for me. We saw a cow elk and a calf. WOW!! It was awesome watching the little one run. Almost as good as seeing my mare, Lady, with her first foal.
A little further down the road, we got to see quite a few more elk.
We head for home…some storm clouds looked like they were rolling in.
We were both tired, achy, and I had blisters on my feet. At least no more hiking until next weekend.
