Chloe and Her First Thanksgiving
By PK | December 5, 2008
Sometimes it’s hard being a new grandmother when a grandchild is born almost two thousand miles away. For me, there was still the early morning wake up call, “We’re headed to the hospital.” But the wait is lonely, not that of a busy hospital with other grandparents and relatives surrounding you, without the nurses giving you updated results, and then the final moment you’ve been waiting for that you can’t witness, seeing your grandchild the minute she lays her eyes on the world around her.
First picture text I received
You finally receive a phone call that mother and child are safe and healthy, then the awaited picture text. And believe me, I carried the phone around with me all day waiting for this, which isn’t normal for me. I immediately ran to my computer, my eyes aren’t being what they used to be, signed in on my Verizon account to view this wonder in full life and as large as I could enlarge the picture, then carefully saved her picture into the file I created just for her among my other 10 grandchildren.
Second picture text I received
My son and Jess were estatic, a relief that Chloe finally arrived all sound, beautiful, and healthy. I could hear the joy in Ron’s voice as he described Chloe and related all the details to me. Their life has changed and now includes diapers, feedings, and the best, spoiling their new bundle of joy!
Chloe Leigh was born November 11, that’s 11-11 and she’s my eleventh grandchild. Strange, huh? But it gets weirder, cause my 10th grandchild was born October 10th. Now I really find this unusual because of who the parents are. Ron, the oldest of my twin sons, is the father of Chloe, and his twin brother, Allen, is the father of Ava, my 10th granddaughter born on 10-10. Now some would say I should be able to remember the girl’s birthdates easily, true. Just so that in my old age I don’t start thinking my first grandchild was born on 1-1, which she wasn’t. *grin*
Chloe’s First Thanksgiving
Aw…to be able to hug and hold this wonderful, precious granddaughter! What a joy that would bring me! As I awaited for her, my fingers were busy as I crocheted her a dress and sweater set her mother picked out.
A beautiful pink dress and bonnet for Chloe. The dress is double-crocheted using baby weight yarn with an overlapping shell trim at the hem and sleeves. Pink satin roses trimmed with circles of lace were stitched on the babydoll yoke and bonnet. I crocheted a tiny plat in the back where I left an opening, including buttonholes, then stitched on tiny, pink buttons for the garment closure. The bonnet is also double-crocheted with the same overlapping shell trim. Purchased pink satin ribbon is used for ties.
And a smart white sweater and tam with little crocheted shoes. The sweater, tam, and baby shoes are double-crocheted using baby-weight yarn. The sweater is double-breasted with small cuffs on each sleeve. The baby shoes resemble a little girl’s patten leather dress shoes.
To complete the outfits, I crocheted this beautiful pink and white ripple afghan and tied pink satin bows at each corner. The afghan is a double-crocheted soft ripple, alternating pink and white baby-weight yarn. I then single crocheted two rows around the outside for stability and edged with a pink shell stitch to accent the crocheted dress’s trim. The pink satin bows are removable.
The complete layout
I had to ship these, but the other items I purchased online and shipped directly to them, which saved me a bundle of money. I can’t wait for Ron and Jess to ‘dress up’ Chloe in the clothes Mimi made for her and send me pictures. You know I’ll post those pictures as soon as I get them.

Ok Pk!!! Your creations for Chloe are soooo beautiful!! I wish you could wrap your loving arms around her and hold her! My heart aches for you! I hate that my only 2 grandkids live 1800 miles away..Christmas though, they are coming here! Last Christmas at OUR home~ 1993!
Papa hasn’t seen them for 3 years! (I got to see them in March..2 ½ yrs)
You know PK…I had always hoped that as we got older, life would get easier in some ways.
NOT SO tho. What the news said tonight, the picture is fastly growing bleaker and will continue through 09! That gives a lot to be excited about, don’t you think?
I sure hope times ease up for you and Dalton…and hey, how much closer are you???? 45 miles??? Still not a days drive for either of us oldies but goodies!
We are so thankful for our Faith has seen us through worse times.
And we are survivors as I believe you and Dalton are too!
Have a wonderful weekend.
You should have hunted here…7 deer were taken down our drive headed home westward as they departed this hunting season. (Think I’m closing my doors next year…some family members totally broke my rules and ‘used and abused’ our hospitality. “One rotten apple can spoil the lot”…think that happened.)
