National Anthem Controversy
By PK | July 2, 2008
In Denver yesterday Rene Marie, a local jazz singer, was suppose to sing, ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ at the State of the City Address, instead, surprising everyone, she sang the Black National Anthem, ‘Lift Every Voice and Sing’, causing quite a stir among the politicians and residents of Denver.
I will have to agree with the majority of the Denver residents, and that’s a whopping 97%, that what Rene Marie did was wrong. She was asked to sing, ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’, and she didn’t. She took it upon herself to sing whatever she wanted.
One black woman reportedly called Fox News and said, “For years the black people have been FORCED to listen to the WHITE National Anthem…”
That is appalling! This is not a black or white issue. This is Our Country’s National Song and should not be sung other than the way it was wrote by Francis Scott Key in 1814.
Other Denver residents with their opinions said:
“They should have removed her from the Address..”
“She owes the City of Denver a public apology…”
“Is this what we have to look forward to if Obama becomes President?”
My sentiments exactly!!!! Long live ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’
Oh say, can you see by the dawn’s early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming.
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
Over the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming,
And the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
Over the land of the free and home of the brave?
