    NBC Poll

    By PK | August 28, 2008

Do you believe that the word God should stay in American culture?

NBC had a poll on this question. They had the highest Number of responses that they have ever had for one of their polls, and the percentage was the same as this: 86% to keep the words, IN God We Trust and God in the Pledge of Allegiance 14% against That is a pretty ‘commanding’ public response. I was asked to send this on if I agreed or delete if I didn’t. Now it is your turn. It is said that 86% of Americans believe the word God should stay. Therefore, I have a very hard time understanding why there is such a mess about having ‘In God We Trust’ on our money and having God in the Pledge of Allegiance. Why is the world catering to this 14%? AMEN! If you agree, pass this on; if not, simply delete. In God We Trust.

“I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America,

and to the republic for which it stands,

    one nation under God,

indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

    The Star-Spangled Banner

O! say can you see by the dawn’s early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming.
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming.
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
‘Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more!
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps’ pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

O! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war’s desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav’n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: ‘In God is our trust.’
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

I completely agree!! I think the problem is, that the 14% have the best lawyers, thus they have the biggest voice. Yet another reason not to like lawyers (some, not all). There is a point where everyone cannot be satisfied and this 14% should just learn to live with it. No one is forcing them to read their money. No one is forcing them to say the Pledge. They should just get a life! If we try to please everyone, our society will become a watered-down mess with no beliefs or ideals. Whew, I’m climbing down from my soapbox and getting some soda. Anyway, thanks for a great post!

If you do not consider the minority opinion then you have a country that believes in the tyranny of the majority. This may seem like a small thing when it comes to the word God in the pledge of allegiance but consider what majority opinion would have meant to the civil rights movement, or women getting the right to vote. For a society to be truly progressive every voice needs to be heard.

In a democracy, the majority rules and the minorities are protected by laws. I don’t believe taking God out of the Pledge of Allegiance is a small thing. If you remove “God” from the Pledge of Allegiance, then you’d have to rewrite The Declaration of Independence, the U. S. Constitution, and all 50 State Constitutions. If ‘under God’ is removed from the Pledge, new coins would have to be struck and paper currency reprinted. The Star Spangled Banner would have to be rewrote and our Supreme Court, which opens each session with “God save the United States and this honorable court” would have to stop. All government employees would no longer enjoy Christmas Day, as it would be considered an endorsement of the Christian religion. I don’t believe we should rewrite what our forefathers have founded. You have the right, being of majority or minority, to participate or not participate. I, for one, will participate, as I also exercise my right to vote as a woman. Amen.
