Steamboat….traffic everywhere!
By PK | July 23, 2008
On Monday while Dalton and I were lazily trying to make our way through Steamboat, which seems to be only on Lincoln Avenue, we were stopped at a red light. Pedestrians were waiting on either side to cross when the little hand turned green. A latecomer on a bike towing his leashed dog started to cross slightly out of the pedestrian cross lines…if there were any, I didn’t check. An SUV making a left turn almost clipped him. While I questioned the legality of an illegal crossing (late and out of crosswalk), I do understand the legality that the cyclist had the right of way.
Tempers seem to be flaring as more tourists are flocking to Steamboat. Somebody, please, hand me a bucket of water to douse a few of these people. Whatever happened to common courtesy? Go take a walk up in the mountains, cool off, relax, SLOW DOWN….
What better time than any to post, “Bicycling in Colorado - Rules of the Road”
*Bicyclists have all the rights and duties applicable to the driver of any other vehicle and can be penalized for violating traffic laws.
*Ride on the right. Never ride against traffic. Ride in the right lane, except when passing another vehicle, preparing for a left turn or avoiding hazards. Always ride with the flow of traffic. Ride on the paved shoulder whenever a paved shoulder suitable for bicycle riding is present.
*Ride single file. Ride two abreast only when no motor vehicle traffic is approaching within 300 feet (front and rear) or when all cyclists are in the shoulder. On curving canyon roads, play it safe and ride single file.
*Obey traffic laws, signs and signals. Use hand signals to indicate left or right turns, slowing or stopping.
*Use a headlight, taillight and reflectors at night, make eye contact with drivers. Never assume motorists see you or that you have the right-of-way. Expect the unexpected: your first responsibility is to avoid a crash.
*Always wear a helmet!

Yes, it appears as if the world has lost its mind. Most people hate rules and regulations, but most, as we see, can not survive without them. It appears that most are so used to being told what, when and how, that these have forgotten how to think for themselves.
When the tern anarchy comes to mind, most think of a rebellious person without direction, or lacking a common goal for society as a whole, yet just the opposite is its meaning.
A true anarchist needs no direction from government nor any other law enforcement agency, as he has learned restraint, self-control and how to see the world as one people, rather than just his own selfish needs.
However, when this deficient spirit has consumed all there is left to consume, he will then consume himself.
Rest assured, his time as just about reached its maximum, as Truth will once again take His throne.
