Butcher Knife Canyon and Trail, Steamboat Springs, Colorado
By PK | January 19, 2009
We recently moved back to Steamboat and now feel in the heart of things. The first place Dalton and I wanted to explore is the Butcher Knife Canyon and Trail located directly behind our house. It was a plus to renting this property as we both like to hike even in the winter. So, we borrowed Vinnie and off we went.
I don’t know who is more anxious to get going….Vinnie or Dalton.
Steamboat has approximately 26 parks located throughout the town. It is nothing unusual to see people out hiking, jogging, and enjoying the outdoors despite chilly temperatures.
On the day we moved in, this elk decided to visit our neighbors behind us. Apparently, she also enjoys the park. Dalton still laughs as he remembers my comment as I thought she was laying down when actually she’s standing in deep snow.
As you enter the canyon, huge, snow covered boulders surround you to create a feeling of seclusion. The walk is peaceful as many residents in the area take advantage of this serene environment.
The well-traveled path is snow-packed with the many footsteps of humans and dogs. Walking is an easy stroll unless you’re with Vinnie. His excitement kept him and Dalton way ahead of me.
The trail opens up as you head towards Strawberry Park Elementary and Junior High, seen in the distance. Some smaller trails, shown on the left, take you down to Butcher Knife Creek.
Snow art decorates the trail for all to enjoy…
as well as beautiful, icy scenery waiting to catch your eye.
We headed off to the left on a smaller trail headed uphill towards a nearby horse ranch. As I stepped off the trail to capture this shot of the horses, I sunk down into loose, powdery snow up past my knees. Okay….lesson learned. Next time, I’ll stay on the beaten path.
We circled around the ranch and headed home. Our house is located below us with Emerald Mountain rising high in the background.
‘Home Sweet Home’ and time for some hot chocolate to warm our chilly fingers and toes. As for Vinnie, he’ll have to curl up next to the fire.
