Elk Hunters from Pennsylvania
By PK | December 3, 2008
With the combined hunting experience of 269 years, 12 hunters traveled 3400+ round trip miles to hunt Colorado’s elk on a six-day hunting excursion. Thousands of dollars for each hunter was paid in advance to hunt on a private ranch and public hunting area, Unit 15.
Out of state elk licenses for a bull elk cost a whopping $525.00. Next year expect to pay more for a bull elk license when it takes a jump to $545.00. While this year’s numbers haven’t yet been compiled, anecdotal reports from wildlife officers around the Western Slope indicate a slump in big-game hunter numbers.
“As we get closer to our desired elk population objective, the number of elk licenses available will dwindle,” Remington told the commission and the audience at the DoubleTree Hotel in Colorado Springs.
“We knew that would happen, especially in the northwest.”
Although there still are more elk in the state than the DOW considers either socially or biologically desirable, the agency in this decade has made inroads in reducing elk numbers.
A recent estimate said elk numbers have dropped by about 20,000 animals since 2000. There are an estimated 292,000 elk in the state while the population objective is between 202,000 and 234,000.
Much of the reduction came through increased availability of licenses for cow elk, something that will end, said Remington, as elk herds get closer to objectives.
From counter-clock wise, Jerry, Rick, Preston, J.J., Gilbert, David, Sean, Russ, Jason, Jerry and Addison.
At the head of the table, Allen and Dalton.
Allen, Addison, and Jerry reminisce as they wait for their dinner at the Village Inn in Steamboat Springs.
Jerry, Jason, Russ, and Preston listen as Rick recalls the cow he bagged. Rick was the only lucky hunter who went home with an elk for his freezer.
Clockwise-Sean, David, Gilbert, J. J., and Preston. While taking these pictures, I heard one of the hunters exclaim, “Smile, Girls!” It didn’t help much!
Left to right-Gilbert, J. J., Preston, Rick and Jerry. No, J. J., I’m not taking your order, just your picture!
Clockwise- J. J., Preston, Rick, Jerry, and Dalton on the left side of the table.
The 2007 Elk Harvest in Unit 15 was 384 bulls, 328 cows, 41 calves from 3,722 hunters. That’s a success rate of only 20 percent. The highest percent rate was in Unit 10 with 56 percent. Unit 10 is located in the southwestern corner of Moffat County. The lowest was 7 percent in Unit 7 located in Larimer County. To check other units and harvests for 2007, click here.
Will any of these hunters be back for the 2009 Elk Hunting Season? We certainly hope so as we look forward to seeing them again. To check the dates for the 2009 Hunting Season in Colorado, click here.
Until then, Happy Hunting in PA!!!

Hi PK,
Interesting reading. Pretty expesive hobby with a low success rate of netting. I guess that part and parcel of hunting. Do you have any favourite elk recipes?

Hey PK! I haven’t been here in a long time.I’m so sorry!
I sure hope things are looking up for you and Dalton. I think about you constantly & with this horrible economy. I’m presuming you are staying in CO for awhile longer?
I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Are you heading E. for Christmas?
With tons of thoughts and prayers sending your way….

Hi Martin. Thanks once again for visiting. Elk hunting is an expensive hobby unless you live in the state, which is one of the reasons for moving here.
I usually cook elk just like I would beef. The advantage of elk is that it is lean, therefore better for you. It doesn’t have a wild taste, nor is it tough like some deer meat I’ve had.
I’ll be around to visit your blogs soon…I’ve been offline for over a week so I’ve got a lot of catching up to do.
